In this talk, I will develop the degree to which “biopower” and “biopolitics” can be helpful categories for investigations into the culture of death. I will introduce the topics and then apply them to the twentieth-century manipulations of female fertility, in the name of demography. I will show that biopower had a preoccupation with female fertility and, therefore, a disproportionate negative impact on women.
